Fire (1996), directed by Deepa Mehta, is an Indian film about two women related as sisters-in-law through their unhappy arranged marriages to two brothers. Living side by side in their husbands’ family home, they are drawn together as friends, and fall in love. With humor and poignancy, the film explores the oppression of wives in Indian society, and tells the intimate story of two women who try to overcome loneliness and find happiness through their secret relationship.
