Reflecting on mass imprisonment and extreme punishment Stevenson says, “we all need mercy, we all need justice, and—perhaps—we all need some measure of unmerited grace” (18). Let’s collectively examine the ways in which the children and adults featured in Just Mercy inform our work at Hostos and within an institution that serves the South Bronx, a community that is disproportionately affected by the criminal justice system. What can we do to support Hostos students who might have direct involvement in the criminal justice system and/or students who have family members, friends, and/or neighbors who have been affected by the criminal justice system? In what ways does Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy inform your work at Hostos?
