As part of the transition to D2L Brightspace, CUNY will be tasked with copying the two most recent years of your Blackboard courses over to the new LMS. However, it is recommended to have your own backup of your courses – both as a coded zip file compatible with LMS and a text file (e.g., Word document of relevant course topics, such as assignment instructions or discussion board forum questions). This not only provides extra layers of security but also ensures that you have full control over all your materials. In this unit, we will guide you through the process of creating a coded backup of your Bb course in the form of a zip file that can be uploaded into D2L.
Log in to Blackboard and navigate to the course you want to back up and follow the steps outlined in the post below.
After downloading the zip file, it is important not to unzip it. The zip file is a coded version of your course that can be uploaded into another LMS. Unzipping the file could disrupt the coding and make it difficult or impossible to upload the course into a new LMS. You can store the zip file in a secure location for future use. One option is to use CUNY Dropbox, which provides a secure cloud storage solution.
In summary, the two most recent years of our courses will be copied over to D2L by CUNY LMS admin and the coded file should serve as a personal backup of your course materials, giving you peace of mind as we move toward the new LMS. However, if you wish to upload the zip file into D2L in the future, please contact EdTech.
