Create a Custom Copilot Agent

Glossary

Agent

Copilot chat agents are focused helpers inside Microsoft Copilot that handle specific tasks, like answering questions about your syllabus or creating quiz questions, so you get targeted, specialised responses.

To learn now to log into CUNY Copilot, please see the post below.

Once in your Copilot chat account, click the Expand Navigation icon at the top-left.

Click the Create an agent link.

Click the Configure tab at the top.

Type you agent’s name.

Briefly describe the agent’s specialty in the description field.

In the Instructions field, type the task that your agent should execute. Include the step-by-step instructions.

Example >>

(Optional) Enter the URL that is no more than two levels deep.

Example of a valid format
https://www.hostos.cuny.edu/Administrative-Offices/Information-Technology/
Let’s break it down:

https:// → connection type

www.hostos.cuny.edu → main website

/Administrative-Offices → Level 1

/Information-Technology → Level 2

This format works because it contains only two slashes after .edu.x

🔗 Tip: If the content lives on a deeper page, link to the nearest higher-level page that connects to it. If your source is a published file (like a PDF), specify in the agent instructions that responses must be grounded only in that document, even if the top-level URL is broader.

Prioritize the knowledge sources you added for agent knowledge-based queries (Toggle)
This toggle allows you to make these added knowledge sources the primary reference for the Copilot’s responses. When switched on, the Copilot will prioritize content from your specified sources over its default knowledge.

Capabilities

Code Interpreter: When enabled, the assistant can run code, analyze data, perform calculations, and work with files (like CSVs or Excel) using built-in tools.

Image Generator: When enabled, the assistant can create images based on text prompts using generative AI.

Starter Prompts

Starter prompts are pre-written questions or messages that appear when someone opens your Copilot agent.

In Title, type a short label (e.g., “Summarize Notes”).

In the Message field, type the full question or request (e.g., “Summarize the key points from these meeting notes.”).

Add more prompts by clicking + Add new.

Use the trash icon to delete a prompt if needed.

Click the Create button at the top.

You will be prompted to set the sharing link of your agent. Please follow the instructions in the Share Copilot Agent section of this handout.

Once in your Copilot chat account, click the Expand Navigation icon at the top-left.

Click the All agents link under Chat. This will lead you to the Agent store, where you can access all your agents and also a library of prebuilt AI agents created by Microsoft or trusted partners.

Click on the View More link under the Your agents section, if needed.

Hover your mouse over the agent’s name. Click on the ellipsis (three dots) and select Edit.

Repeat the steps of editing the Copilot agent described above.

Set the link access by choosing between:

  • Anyone in your organization (this option will enable all CUNY students, faculty, and staff who have this link to access it)
  • Specific users in your organization (requires you to manually add CUNY users who will have access to your agent, e.g., only your current class)
  • Only you

Click the rectangle icon at the end of the URL to copy to shareable link.

Paste the link into Brightspace, email, or MS Teams.
