Using Smartphone Video Capabilities as a Self- Reflection Tool for Learning

Presenter:

Laura Andel, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Humanities, Hostos Community College

Abstract:

Most students use a smartphone in their daily lives, so why not use smartphones as a tool to facilitate learning? In this presentation, the presenter will share her experiences implementing video assignments. Research has shown that self-reflection activities promote student engagement and increase student success in a variety of disciplines. The presenter will share how in the Fundamentals of Music Theory course students submitted a video recording of themselves playing at the keyboard. Before submitting their video, students had a chance to improve their performance as many times as they need guided by a rubric provided by the instructor. This practice allows students to listen, practice, produce, self-assess, and document their own progress. Furthermore, video sharing among classmates allows them to build a sense of community in the classroom. In this presentation, the presenter will elaborate on the formative assessment modality and effective use of video sharing, demonstrate student examples, and share end-of-semester student survey. Lastly, session attendees will engage in a brief discussion on ways to use video assignments, as well as best practices on how to implement this approach as a learning tool.
