Abstract:

Nursing students entering the RN evening program are required to master several nursing skills in order to progress to senior level courses, for example, subcutaneous injection and donning personal protective equipment.  These skills are traditionally taught via video or through lecturing with required return demonstrations in the nursing lab. Advances in technology and the diverse learning needs of our student body push the envelope toward the need for innovative methods for achieving learning outcomes.  The presenters will discuss their experience using the following experiential learning activity, which was implemented in an evening fundamental nursing course.  Three skills were identified by faculty for students to view with the accompanied skills textbook.  Students were then assigned to small groups of six to complete one of the three skills that they were responsible for learning.  Each group had to record the assigned skill via lecture capture software Ponopto video and post the recorded lecture capture software for the class to view. Upon completion and posting their video, each group was then tasked with using a standard self-reflective tool to critique the two other groups on the skills video.
