Bringing Course Materials to Student Social-Media Routine: An Additional Path to Build Content Understanding

Abstract:

The presentation will focus on student activities creating online content using smartphones. Specifically, the presenter will share how Blackboard was supplemented with the use of Instagram to support student learning. The session will provide specific examples on the use case of Instagram to share key concepts, the use of news stories, and more. The presenter will share how other educational technologies such as AirPlay, iPhone, Splice, and Snapchat were used in other courses to support student learning. These educational technology tools simply capitalize on student means of communication and their ability to edit and post-produce. The preliminary results of this work shows its impact on fostering an engaged class dynamic. Overall, the use of these online tools capitalizes on student digital literacy to develop their expected academic literacy.
