Using OpenLab to Enhance Teaching and Learning in Introductory American Government Courses

Students at the freshman level face not only challenges to their analytical and writing skills but also a perceived disconnect between their academic and professional goals and the courses required for graduation. Overwhelmed with so many challenges, many students will disengage from in- depth learning in subject matters that are not part of their majors and/or minors. Open Access technology is especially suited for this purpose because students can use it to share their work beyond the classroom.To engage students in my introductory American Government courses at City Tech I have designed a multiple-step assignment that incorporates open access in a secure setting to showcase student work. This presentation describes the goals for this assignment, such as: making learning about the American government meaningful to students; foster deeper understanding of the American government; and facilitate peer-to-peer learning.
