Development of an Open Online Preparatory Course Textbook for Human Anatomy and Physiology
Carlos Liachovitzky, Lecturer, Department of Biological Sciences; & Maureen Gannon,Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, Bronx Community College
Human Anatomy and Physiology is a challenging Pathways Gateway Course into Nursing and the Allied Health programs. Many of the approximately 600 students starting the course each semester come to it with very little science background and a lack of experience on how to study. This presentation briefly describes the process of writing an open preparatory course textbook, and making a digital version of it in Blackboard. Goals of offering an open preparatory course textbook and an online version of it are to increase students’ awareness on the challenges ahead, to increase their preparedness and confidence in success, and to improve their performance and reduce attrition. This presentation will also analyze a preliminary assessment of student participation and responses to the preparatory course, its use and usefulness, and future development.
