What is the difference between asynchronous, synchronous, and online courses?

When you register for classes, pay attention to the type of course you are selecting.

Asynchronous You do not engage in live classes. Assignment deadlines are in the syllabus.  You decide when to log in. Don’t miss deadlines. Faculty can schedule non-mandatory opportunities for live interactions.

Synchronous means that there are class sessions at which you must be (virtually) present. Students must commit to scheduled class times and sign onto their virtual learning platform on schedule in real-time.

Hybrid is designed to integrate face-to-face and online activities so that they reinforce and complement one another. Assignment deadlines and exams days/times are maintained and included on the class syllabus. All live meeting days/times must be listed in the schedule of classes for students.
