On April 13-15th 2018, Hostos Community College reached the top and distinguished itself with excellence by winning a total number of three (3) First Place trophies at the 26th Annual CSTEP Statewide Student Conference that was held at the Sagamore Resort on Lake George in Bolton Landing, New York. The conference was attended by 655 participants including staff from 52 institutions of higher education in New York State. Here are the highlights of student presentation outcomes:
- Oral Presentation competition:
- The project “Indoor and Outdoor Monitoring of Elderly using BLE Technology” presented by Elan Anderson, Calvin Francis, and Swimi Kolancheril who were mentored by Professors Biao Jiang (Natural Science Department) won the First Place trophy in the Computer Science and Technology category.
- Poster Presentation competition:
- The project “Melanin Extraction Protocol” presented by Inzamamdeen Kassim who was mentored by Professor Van Chanh Phan, Natural Science Department, won the First Place Trophy in the Biological Science category.
- The project “Concrete Inspection Using Deep Learning” presented by Miguel Febriel and Melissa Souffront and mentored by Professors Biao Jiang and Liang Yang won the First place trophy in the Engineering Category.
Other Hostos students who attended the conference were Thierno Diallo, Keneil Fearon, Oumarou Kafando, Antonio Paulino, and Mohamed Sajath among which all poster presenters received medals for participation in the poster competition, and Abigail Regalado who represented Hostos CC as our student ambassador.
I would like to thank all the faculty mentors: Prof. Tanvir Prince (Mathematics Department), Prof. Biao Jang, Prof. Van Phan, and Prof. Allison Franzese (Natural Sciences Department) for taking time out of their busy schedule to mentor our students. Special thanks to our CSTEP staff for their hard work, dedication and their tremendous support in preparing students for the Statewide CSTEP conference.
