Figures in Flight

On April 15, 2015 Professor Wolf and Professor Yannacañedo presented a screening of Figures in Flight followed by a panel in the Black Box Theater. The purpose of the event was to create a dialogue about the power of rehabilitation through the arts and to encourage volunteerism. The award-winning documentary short film, Figures in Flight, documents the journey of incarcerated men after participating in a modern dance prison program led by choreographer and volunteer Susan Slotnick. The panel included Lauren Wolf, Susan Slotnick, and and Ray Britto, one of the rehabilitated and formally incarcerated dancers. Professor Wolf has taught mathematics for the past seven years in both medium and maximum state prisons. Professor Yannacañedo moderated the panel due to her years of experience as teaching artist. The response from the students was overwhelmingly positive, with many staying after to speak with and thank the panelists. The event was co-sponsored by David Johnson of The Black Male Initiative.
