Celebrate the Art of Teaching

3rd Annual CTL Spa Day

Celebrate the Art of Teaching is the theme of the third annual Center for Teaching and Learning professional development day, aka, CTL Spa Day.

This year, the CTL Advisory Council wanted to emphasize the outstanding contributions of Hostos faculty and educators.  The ways to recognize teaching excellence was hotly debated over the course of the academic year.  The Council resolved to celebrate the craft by honoring educational excellence that is evident by the daily achievements of the Hostos campus community members.

The goals of Celebrate the Art of Teaching include:

  • Celebrate the end of another successful academic year
  • Reflect and question our own teaching practices
  • Recognize teaching as a process by which excellence is achieved through active engagement and reflection over time
  • Share best practices in transference of knowledge and information capacity building
  • Reward all Hostos faculty and educators who are committed to setting and achieving high academic standards

The CTL Advisory Council believes that teachable moments occur in all types of spaces including traditional and non-traditional learning environments.  The Council also believes that the personal and social development of students is as important as their  academic achievement.  For this purpose, the Spa Day schedule includes presenters from different college divisions including: Academic Affairs, Student Development and Enrollment Management and the Hostos Department of Public Safety.

High impact practices identified by American Association of Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) are being used in Hostos learning environments.  A few presentations will highlight practices related to:

  •  Collaborative Assignments and Projects
  • Diversity/Global Learning
  • Service Learning, Community-Based Learning
  • Undergraduate Research

We are eager to engage in conversations that cover a range of topics from teaching techniques and strategies to strengthening student skills-based competencies to best practices in assessment and application of lessons learned.  We couldn’t be more excited to welcome our tenured, tenure track, and part-time faculty as well as staff, executives, visitors, and guests to engage in an invigorating day of professional development that promises to have everyone thinking about new ways to approach the teaching and learning environments at Hostos and beyond.  All together, we aim to leave the professional spa with questions that enrich our teaching process with a more living dynamic where we look into the future.
